Custom Typography Sample Job - Logo for PBS

Client: PBS - Public Broadcasting Service
Art Direction: John Ruppenthal
Job: PBS Arts Fall Festival Logo

PBS Arts Fall Festival was launched on October 14, 2011 and will air on Friday nights for nine weeks. It is part of PBS's commitment to increase every American's access to the arts. It intends to bring some zest into a previously dull format.

The general direction of the logo design was well under way when I was called in. All of the design
elements were coming together into a cohesive design, except for the custom typography "Fall Festival".

John Ruppenthal, Creative Director at PBS, and his team were not happy with the look of "Fall Festival". John wanted to see a range of options from me; clean-edged, textural, different weights, bouncy, uniform, and differents letterforms.
From the exploratory round of custom typography above, John determined he wanted a watercolor look to marry it to the watercolor ovals in the background, and a backup clean-edged version in case of readability issues with the watercolor look,
Once John and his team determined that the watercolor version would work, I made minor adjustments to his pick from the round of custom typography above. The final art was sent to John as a grayscale Photoshop file. PBS made all of the color adjustments.
